North Queensland is a great place for interns to kick start their medical career and to gain valuable skills and experience.

You can apply for an internship after completing your medical degree. Interns are usually employed on a 12-month temporary contract though we encourage interns to extend their placement for another 2 to 3 years.

You’ll be rostered to complete all your required terms in surgery, general and emergency medicine. You can also elect extra terms in your fields of interest and in our rural facilities.

Resident medical officers are usually employed on a 12 month temporary contract.

To become part of our team you must:

• get a work visa or be entitled to residency
• have evidence of immunity to Hepatitis A and B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis and Varicella
• be tested and show you don't have tuberculosis — our application package has more information.

We welcome applications from experienced health professionals from outside Australia.

If you’re an international applicant, you’ll need to apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA). You can do this through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You’ll also need to provide a comparability assessment from a specialist medical college if you’re employed as any of the following:

• staff specialist
• specialist general practitioner
• recognised advanced practitioner.

We contribute up to 12.75 per cent of your salary into superannuation.

The superannuation fund used by Queensland Government departments is QSuper but you can choose a different one.

If you don’t choose another fund, your superannuation contributions will be made to QSuper as the Queensland Government’s default fund for our employees.

QSuper is an open fund which means that anyone can become a member.

Salary packaging is when you and your employer ‘package’ your salary into income and benefits. It’s also known as salary sacrifice.

How it works

Salary packaging is when you arrange to receive less income after tax, in return for your employer paying for benefits out of your pre-tax salary. The benefits could be things like a car or a phone.

For example, you might package a salary of $100,000 so that you receive:

• $85,000 as income
• $15,000 car as a benefit.

This reduces your taxable income to $85,000 and you may pay less income tax.

You may be able to sacrifice:

• mortgage repayments
• rent
• additional superannuation contributions
• utilities such as electricity, gas etc) costs
• insurance
• novated car leases
• private school fees.

You can salary sacrifice if you’re:

• permanent - either full-time or part-time
• temporary – either full-time or part-time
• long-term casual - employed on a regular basis for 12 months or more.

Setting it up

You need to arrange your salary package before you get paid. You can't package your salary after you've earned it.

Salary packaging is usually more effective for people on middle to high incomes. You may want to get professional tax advice to see if salary packaging is right for you.
